Four New Readings in October and November
After a summer of trying to set up readings without luck—thanks Covid—suddenly, a break and another and another. Now I have four new readings booked and am awaiting a reply for a fifth. Here are the places, dates, and times. Hope to see some friendly faces. Please come out—and bring a crowd if you can.
- Thursday, Oct. 14 at 6:00, Morgenstern’s Books; Bloomington, Indiana. This beautiful new bookstore is a Phoenix story as it was a popular place back in the 1970s and has been revived by the owner.
- Saturday, Oct. 23 at 1:00, Roebling Point Bookstore and Café; Covington, Kentucky. I love this little bookstore which is also home to a publishing company focused on travel and food—both owned by Richard Hunt.
- Thursday, Oct. 28 at 7:00, Joseph Beth Booksellers; Cincinnati, Ohio. This is the region’s largest independent bookstore, and another favorite of mine. They bring in local and national writers every week. Proud and honored to read there again.
- Wednesday, Nov. 3 at TBD, Beverly Public Library; Beverly, MA. This marks a homecoming for me, after living in beautiful Beverly for 20 years and serving on the Library board for 12 years, six as chair.

A Quick Snack
Here’s the opening of one story: The Chain Saw Artist “For crying out loud, Beth, we’re not talking about college,” Mason said. “We’re talking about a chain saw.” “Fine,” she said and walked on. Mason followed, remembering her hair before she cut it, how she used to wear it in a chestnut-colored ponytail, and how the swing of it had always aroused him. He jogged to catch her, but once again she cantered half a step ahead. The pace had to hurt with her feet pinched into those pumps. Love is complicated. People and relationships change. What do they do to hang on? To step apart? Ultimately, art is dangerous. You’ll see how. |

You can still order a signed copy of the book from me. They cost $17. That works out to $1.06 per story! Such a deal! Payment accepted via Venmo, Paypal, credit card, etc.. Order by emailing me: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. Bookstores—including Amazon and your local independent bookstore—are now selling the book too. It’s an exciting time to see the books move out into the world. |

If you’ve read Fire in the Field and Other Stories, please tell other people about it. And please add a review to Amazon or Goodreads. Your honest review need not be complex or long, but reviews really help because the recommendation algorithm at Amazon makes more recommendations with more reviews. |

Last Word from a Reader: As always, I like to give a reader the last word. I appreciate every reader more than you can imagine and welcome your thoughts. Thank you all. This quote came via email from a business acquaintance I hadn’t heard from in a dozen years: “Every story leaves me stunned and reflecting on my own life. I feel as if each character in each story represents a part of myself. I identify with almost all of them in one way or another. Every story takes me to a magical place where I forget about the world I am in and walk in the world of these characters. Thank you again. I absolutely love this book.” -- Tate Webb, video editor/producer |
